Bone cancer can be one of several different cancers that develop in the bones. Cancers that begin in the bone are called primary bone cancers. Tumors that begin in organs or other parts of the body can also spread to the bones. Treatments include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Bone cancers are rare. They make up less than 1% of cancers in the United States. While they can develop at any age, they are more common in children, teenagers, and young adults. Bone cancer can refer to primary bone cancer, which starts in the bones, or secondary bone cancer, which spreads to the bones from another part of the body:
Primary bone cancer
A rare type of cancer that can affect any bone, but most often develops in the long bones of the arms or legs. Some types of primary bone cancer include osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
